Abstract | Examined the association of a prior Latin or French language education with the performance in learning Spanish. The performance of 50 native German speakers who had completed a university Spanish course was assessed with a translation test. One half had studied French and the other half Latin as their second foreign language in high school. Subjects with prior French knowledge made significantly fewer grammar errors and slightly fewer vocabulary errors in the Spanish translation test than subjects with prior Latin knowledge. It is concluded that knowledge of Latin is probably not an optimal preparation for the learning of modern languages. (ZPID). |
