| Abstract | Brechtian scholars have traditionally read Trommeln in der Nacht as a representation of one of two post-World War I conflicts in Berlin, and as a comment on the revolutionary politics of the protagonist Kragler. This essay argues against interpretations of the play that have placed it within a discourse of political commitment and agency. Trommeln in der Nacht's importance lies not in the political position of Kragler, but in Brecht's break from the traditionally unified subject, and this essay explores the implications of that break for the poetics of drama. Rather than portraying specific historical events, Brecht throws the concept of revolution onto the playground of language, presenting an alternate "cultural" reading of revolution. The play presents History as a history of the subject, but a subject that is deprived of its own sense of identity. (Verlag). |
