Abstract | "The following discussion provides a good indication of many of the educational research perspectives and concerns among academic staff in third level colleges in the Republic at present. It does not give a comprehensive picture, rather an introductory sketch. In addition, it must be remembered that substantial educational research activities are undertaken by the Economic and Social Research Institute and by the Educational Research Centre at Drumcondra. The Educational Studies Association of Ireland would like to regard this symposium as the first of many such discussions. It believes that there is everything to be gained from opening up the discourse of the research community in such a way that not only do researchers share their concerns and viewpoints in an open forum but also that policy-making bodies can share more easily and more actively in this discourse. The result should be a greater coordination of research efforts, with substantial benefits for pupils and teachers in the daily course of their work. What follows here is a transcript of the symposium with the minimum amount of editing. Pádraig Hogan, February, 1992." [Source: Editor's Introduction]. |
