Abstract	"This report essentially focuses on the work-family nexus in order to make sense of the paradoxical gender gaps in subjective wellbeing. It considers many possible explanations; among them two are consistent with the available empirical evidence. The first conjecture that this report considers and documents is that women have more diversified preferences. This leads them to a higher level of satisfaction, but also to a higher level of time stress and the ensuing negative emotions. The second one is that women's expectations are lower, which leads them both to a higher level of satisfaction and a greater exposure to depression. The report focuses on happiness gaps within European countries. However, in some parts, in order to exploit wider institutional variations, it also encompasses broader international evidence. The plan of the report is as follows. Part I introduces the concepts and data and presents a general picture of gender gaps in subjective wellbeing in Europe, and more generally across the world. Part II examines the potential determinants of the gender gaps in wellbeing. It starts with 'unsuccessful' candidates such as education, job characteristics or personality traits. It then focuses on the paid work-housework nexus, i.e. issues related to the division of tasks within the household. It also examines the role of domestic violence, expectations, and macro determinants related to the institutional environment. This report is not a survey of the literature. Rather, we produce our own analysis based on the most relevant datasets that cover European countries, such as the European Social Survey (ESS) and the World Values Survey (WVS), as well as the Gender and Generation Panel Survey (GGP) which is dedicated to family relationships. In addition, we refer to the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP)." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku).
