Abstract | The essay deals with the issue of Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union in Germany, their education, and their cultural identity. From 1992 until 2004 more than 220.000 Jewish allocation immigrants ("Kontingentflüchtlinge") came from Russia, Ukraine or Belarus to Germany. Today, they constitute the majority of members in most of the Jewish communities. Substance of the essay is a biographical-narrative interview with a 1978 born Jewish male from Düsseldorf, whose parents immigrated from Moscow. The questions of the interview refer to his cultural and religious upbringing within the family, his experiences in childhood and youth, and his ways of dealing with different cultural backgrounds. His answers, supposedly representative, give insight into a social and educational setting widely unknown to the German public. (DIPF/Orig.). |
