Abstract | A dystopia can be understood as a kind of anti-utopia: a vision of the world and a society which has gone totally wrong (a bad or evil place) but which at the same time was maybe intended as a utopia. The newspaper text chosen here play upon the idea of dystopia, but it is a debatable point whether in fact it actually deals with a true distopia. Published in the "Guardian" in 2002, it presents the findings formulated in a World Bank report on the world situation in 2022 if humankind continues to use up the natural resources at an ever-increasing rate in order to raise the standard of living in both the developing counties and the developed parts of the world. The outlook is bleak and it is predicted that western societies will slither and slide into a nightmarish dystopian world with environmental and societal collapse. (Verlag, adapt.). |
