AbstractResearch into Vocational Education and Training (VET) has undergone major developments in the last 60 years. This is particularly true of the last 30 years. The rising political, social and economic priority of VET has been principally responsible for this development. However, it is also true to say that some of the disciplines of education have also started to investigate vocational issues in a systematic manner. VET research is also interdisciplinary beyond the confines of Educational Studies properly so called. For example, the Sociology of Work has concerned itself with vocational issues for some time, including studies of skill transmission and formation and the development of occupational identity, while developments in Economics have driven much research into VET, in particular into the relationship between different types of economic development and VET and on the financial returns of investment in VET to both employers and employees. Within the mainstream of educational research there has been significant engagement within the Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education, Educational Economics and the History of Education, not to mention Comparative Education. There has also been considerable cross-fertilisation between Education and the other disciplines mentioned above. In this article, the author will draw attention to what he takes to be the main developments in the area of VET research in the post-war period and in particular in more recent decades. (ERIC).
