Abstract | The challenge of adolescent literacy involves more than providing remediation for students who have not mastered basic reading skills. To become successful learners, adolescents must master complex texts, understand the diverse literacy demands of the different content areas, and navigate digital texts. In this article, Biancarosa reviews what the research says about these three challenges. She advocates that schools revise their curriculums and their professional development to incorporate higher-level literacy in content-area instruction. (Contains 1 figure.) (As Provided). |
