AbstractEveryone in the business of raising funds for graduate and professional schools knows that the effort has certain challenges. Deborah McCreery, of Widener University School of Law, identifies two main hurdles to alumni fundraising at Widener Law: (1) student loan debt; and (2) a perception problem. At Widener Law and other professional and graduate schools, connecting with alumni can be a struggle. Part of it comes down to affinity. Students often feel greater loyalty to the college where they spent their formative undergraduate years, living on campus, rather than where they went to grad school. Yet, with some extra effort and creativity, universities can win over postgrad alumni--and find support in the larger community. Investing in communication, forming productive partnerships with deans, hosting meaningful events, and providing services to alumni and the community can help graduate schools overcome the barriers and tap into the generosity of this hard-to-reach group.
