Abstract | Three statistics motivate most of the empirical research on the educational outcomes of community college transfer students. First, the percentage of first-time college students seeking a bachelor's degree has steadily increased from 50 to 63% over the last 30 years. Second, during the same period, the number of students starting at a community college also increased, and now roughly half of all students in postsecondary education start at a community college. And lastly, recent studies suggest that the transfer rates of community college students range between 25 and 40% with younger students positioned at the upper end of this range. These trends suggest that community colleges are increasingly seen as a more viable pathway to the bachelor's degree, but why has the attainment needle not moved? To answer this question, this study takes a slightly different perspective. Using the latest national data available on this traditional-age (and more transfer-likely) population, this study examines whether junior-level four-year college students who started at a community college, hereafter "transfer students," have similar educational outcomes as those college juniors who only attended a four-year college ("rising juniors")? The results suggest that there are no differences in the outcomes of community college transfers and rising juniors. (Contains 2 figures, 3 tables, and 15 notes.) (ERIC). |
