AbstractGeneric competency is an instrument to assess and measure personal trait of students using 13 constructs with 102 items. Students' abilities to master each of the 13 constructs are very important in order for them to improve their marketability values. This is because nowadays employer is not only looking at the academic intellectual but the most important is various personal traits that become students' asset in highly job market competition. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to identify generic competency profile among first year students at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). By using clustered sampling technique, 1,262 samples were selected from 16,189 first year students of 12 faculties. Generic competency constructs used in this study were adapted from the Malaysian Qualifying Framework (MQF). Data were analyzed according to gender, disciplines and faculties. The result showed that the mean percentage of generic competency profiles between male and female students were very significant. Most of the faculties showed high scores in social obligation and environmental awareness but low scores in globalization and management skills. However, some faculties were also high scores in other generic competency constructs. The differences of high and low scores of generic competency constructs according to faculties can be attributed to courses offered at different faculties generally focused and associated with different constructs. This is true for sciences and non-sciences disciplines. These findings should be very important to UKM in planning proper intervention, hence to improve students' generic competencies.
