AbstractColleges must manage all types of risks on their campuses every day, and none should be of greater concern than those involving students. With students at the core of their mission, higher-education institutions should minimize any risks related to student safety and satisfaction, and governing boards should establish effective policies to support those efforts. To begin to manage risks effectively, colleges should regularly conduct institution-wide assessments of the potential hazards to their students and the services and programs that they've established to meet students' myriad needs. Based on the emerging and long-term claim trends as well as the current environment, it is recommended that boards ask their institutions' administrators to focus especially on evaluating risks related to alcohol use, athletics, guns and violence, health clinics, program restructuring, recruitment and admissions, short-term international programs, and Title IX. In this article, the author describes some of the trends seen in each of those eight areas. (Contains 1 resource and 1 online resource.) (ERIC).
