Abstract | This article discusses exergaming, a groundbreaking type of video game which is creating a revolution in physical education. Exergaming combines physical activity and video gaming to create an enjoyable and appealing way for students to be physically active. An extremely popular choice in this genre is the music video/dance rhythm game (MVDG). One popular example is Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) developed by Konami. These MVDGs provide interactive video games that combine physical movement (dancing) with energetic music and visuals. Bonnie Mohnsen, renowned expert in physical education technology, believes MVDGs are the next big technology device in physical education. MVDGs promote movement and fun for all ages and abilities. Upbeat music and eye-catching animation keep students excited and engaged. Some MVDGs also come with a built-in workout mode that allows players to track how many calories they burn as they play. Because MVDGs are mobile and require minimal space, it can be played in a variety of environments. MVDGs can be utilized beyond to the traditional physical education class session; it can be used before or after class, during lunchtime or recess, in the traditional classroom, and even in the hallway. The games are being studied by researchers and physicians as an innovative and enjoyable way to promote a healthy lifestyle and combat childhood obesity. (Contains 3 figures.) (ERIC). |
