AbstractIt has long been under discussion how the teaching and learning environment should be arranged, how individuals achieve learning, and how teachers can effectively contribute to this process. Accordingly, a considerable number of theories and models have been proposed. Gardner (1983) caused a remarkable shift in the perception of learning theory as well as of teaching and learning process with his "multiple intelligence theory" (MIT). The theory caused a great sensation between 1983 and 2000, during which time a huge array of accounts were produced. The studies conducted seem to have produced results in support of the theory. On the other hand, it should be noted that there were, and still are, some other studies criticizing and detecting some problems with the theory itself as well as with its implementation. This theory is applied to a wide variety of fields ranging from teaching of mathematics to music, education of gifted students, improvement of the quality of guidance for students in schools, rearrangement of evaluation systems, and the perfection of apparatus used for education purposes. This study aims to emphasize that the applicability of the theory in question should be determined by making allowances for the perceptions of a large group of those who are likely to apply. In this study, the post-test pattern of experimental study without a control group is used. The study includes all 180 students applying for a Certificate of Teaching in Turkey. The results of this study, which are obtained through content analysis of data, are presented. From the teachers' perceptions, it can be concluded that MIT makes important contributions to class control and efficiency of the lessons. Through MIT, an individual's active participation and showing his or her abilities provides a more effective assessment. (Contains 4 tables.) (ERIC).
