Abstract | Headteachers, like the leaders of most organisations, operate in a climate of accelerating but discontinuous change. Their responsibilities and accountabilities increase constantly with little sign of reprieve. Yet, many headteachers take on more than one headship in the course of their careers, prompting questions such as: (1) What are headteachers' motives for taking on second and, in some cases, third headships, given the pressures the role now carries? (2) What are the continuing professional development needs of these headteachers? (3) How is their development to be sustained over time? (4) What is the impact on headteachers who fail to secure second headships? and (5) To what extent is there a repeat of successes and failures experienced in first headship? This article explores the issues that surround second headship. The term "second headship" is used here to refer to headteachers who are in their second or subsequent headship. (Contains 2 tables.)
