AbstractThe term "discussion" is widely used to refer to any whole-class interaction around a text or experience. However, not everything that is termed discussion is equally conducive to student learning. In most classrooms, class discussion is a time for transmitting and reviewing course content. The authors refer to this activity instead as a question-and-answer session or recitation. In their work, discussion is more narrowly used to refer to a dialogic free exchange of information among three or more participants. In this article, they describe their work as facilitators with the Center on English Learning and Achievement (CELA), drawing on their experiences there to show how they have encouraged teachers to make increased use of dialogic discourse in the classroom.
