Abstract | This profile describes the key features of the assessment and examination systems of Latvia. A brief overview of the country and its education system is followed by a description of how summative assessment is conducted using a pragmatic blend of traditional school-based practices, standardized tests, and formal examinations which are centrally marked. The system of external examinations is afforded special attention since its evolution from a single subject in 1997 to the current scheme, which forms an integral part of the entrance procedures for higher education, is a potentially valuable model for other transition countries now planning reforms with similar objectives.
