Abstract | This article presents the art therapy treatment of a 6-yearold boy diagnosed with autism without mental retardation. Children create art and draw because it is rooted in the need to relate to their world (Horovitz, Lewis, & Luca, 1967). However, children with autism have difficulty relating (Green & Luce, 1996). This case study explores the value of art therapy interventions in the young boy?s development, growth, and ability to relate. His growth is highlighted by discussing three of his drawings that reflect his progress towards developing object constancy. The importance of art therapy in the treatment of children with the diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder is also explored. (Author). |
