AbstractSuccessive Australian policies have positioned career changers entering teaching as solutions to address the teacher shortage crisis. Career changers come from all walks of life and may experience entering teaching in different ways. To this end, here we ask 23 Australian teacher educators, those responsible for educating the next generation of teachers, what they perceive to be the barriers for fair participation for career changers. To explore this, we draw together two theoretical perspectives: Margaret Archer's theorisations on emergent properties revealing the barriers that teacher educators perceive inhibited career changers entering teaching, and Nancy Fraser's notions of obstacles to justice illuminating fairness of participation facing this cohort. In doing so, we highlight how universities, schools, and systems can better accommodate this diverse group so that they are retained in the profession in economically, politically, and culturally just ways.
