| Abstract | Multicultural literature allows children to gain greater understanding of themselves and others through exploration of lives, realities and experiences of characters within texts. In this article, we discuss the importance of integrating multicultural children's literature (MCL) in an early childhood setting with representation of specific cultural identities not discussed or avoided in many early childhood settings. We then recommend MCL for educators to uphold these diverse representations in their classrooms and suggest strategies for planning read alouds using these picture books. We also discuss how MCL read alouds offers spaces for young learners to engage in meaningful conversations that is crucial for children to develop as global citizens, and MCL can be a powerful tool to guide young learners to consider differences and their role in promoting a just world.
