Abstract | Recent years have seen an explosion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research leading to myriad practical applications. This backdrop serves as a powerful motivator for students. George Mason University hosts an annual Aspiring Students Summer Internship Program (ASSIP) for students to participate as interns in ongoing research with faculty across all STEM disciplines, ranging from purely experimental or dry-lab projects, to interdisciplinary work at their interface. Student interns in our particular laboratory are trained in computational mutagenesis of protein structures, cross-disciplinary work incorporating ideas from diverse STEM disciplines. The data generated are used for training machine learning models to predict the functional effects of protein mutations on stability, activity, drug resistance, or potential for human disease. All interns showcase and communicate their discoveries during a final poster symposium. (As Provided). |
