Abstract | This single-class activity is designed to introduce concepts of rhetoric, narrative, and public memory to students and to help them recognize the persuasive structure of narratives, particularly as applied to value-based popular discourse. Courses: Instructors can implement this activity in a variety of classes, including Introduction to Rhetorical Studies, Rhetorical Criticism, and Rhetoric and Popular Culture. Objectives: This class activity invites students to perform initial steps for the rhetorical analysis of narratives using Barack Obama's "Of Thee I Sing." By analyzing this text and collaboratively proposing extensions of the national narrative that fit within its rhetorical contours, students will demonstrate understanding and application of narrative probability and fidelity. By the end of this activity, students will be able to discern, apply, and evaluate these narrative concepts as they relate to interpretive frameworks as an initial step to performing this type of rhetorical analysis.
