AbstractReported percentages of young children who engage in challenging behavior is estimated between 10% and 20%. This percentage is even greater for children with disabilities. Not surprisingly, when young children with challenging behavior do not receive services and supports early on, they can experience negative social and emotional outcomes long term. Practitioners specializing in challenging behavior can collaborate with early childhood educators (ECE) and early childhood special educators (ECSE) to implement individualized supports that meet the unique needs of children with more serious behavioral concerns. One related service that could form a natural partnership with a team when addressing young children's social and emotional development is a behavior intervention specialist. The purpose of this article is to share four strategies that can support collaboration when addressing a child's challenging behavior and to provide guided questions with observable behaviors that support the collaborative process.
