AbstractElin Lobel has been teaching dance to physical education and dance education majors since 1994. This particular course has been taught in both a large state university in the Midwest and in a large metropolitan university on the east coast. She focuses on teaching dance forms that allow the learners to appreciate their moving bodies, and their connections and relationships to others and the community in which they are dancing. These primarily Euro-American forms are social dance, folk dance, country western and line dance, square dance, and creative movement. The course is designed so that content, pedagogy, and teaching practice are interwoven throughout the course. This article presents an overview of Lobel's teaching strategies related to course content that are informed by evidence-based practice in the fields of motor learning and motor development. Lobel's primary goal is to give prospective dance and physical education teachers an overall experience of dance--as a movement form and an expression of culture. She wants them to be effective and confident in utilizing dance when they become professional teachers after graduation. (ERIC).
