Abstract | Linking Education and Farming (LEAF) Education uses food, farming and nature to reach out to children in new and imaginative ways across the science curriculum. Their work at a grass roots level, with teachers, children and farmers, shows just how powerful farming and nature can be in helping develop a lifelong love for science and fuelling children's innate curiosity and sense of wonder. Science teachers encourage children to become young scientists who are constantly theorising about how the world works, eager to collect, sample, compare, associate and test. Providing rich learning experiences around food, farming and nature furthers this development. Exploring science at an early age through food, farming and nature also provides powerful entry points to many pressing green issues, such as climate change, diets and wellbeing. With a quarter of primary-age children considered obese, using farming to educate them about healthy eating is a key priority. The more children know about food and the science behind it, the more informed decisions they will be able to make around what they feed themselves and their future families. (ERIC). |
