Abstract | Children like to play with smartphones and other touchscreen-based devices, and suitably developed apps can help in entertaining, nurturing, and educating children. For the last three years, the authors have been studying how children interact with smartphones and other touchscreen-based devices. They assert that knowing the capabilities of children at different ages will be helpful in developing videos, apps, and other digital resources for them. In this article, the authors identify five important skills that children need to use apps developed for them. They then experimentally determine how children acquire these skills between 2 and 8 years of age. As computer scientists, they believe that YouTube videos, mobile apps, and other digital resources can play an important role in child development. However, the content and the user interface of these digital resources should be age-appropriate. Parents should be aware of the digital resources their children are using and ensure that children do not engage in excessive use of digital technologies. (ERIC). |
