AbstractSocial media use, activism, and critical digital making are areas where artmaking can serve as both a mode of expression and a civic practice. In light of this context, the authors wonder how art curriculum can both draw on and support this form of civic work. The authors hope to demonstrate in this article that social activism is a highly visible form of cultural production and resistance that many young people are exposed to across different media channels. The work of the authors aims to incorporate young people's engagement with this form of activism to support curriculum development in the field. Their research has pursued the relationship between art education and civic engagement through the development and implementation of a summer program offered in 2018 and 2019. During this program, they invited teen participants to look at the legacy of the civil rights movement in their Southeastern city. From this program's data, they are working to develop a think/make/act curriculum model for turning art education into a site that builds on the contemporary activist work of teens. They are interested in building a curriculum that references the skills and behaviors that support youth civic engagement as integral to artmaking. To this end, they ask: How does student activism call forth the future of art education? Additionally, they examine how the art room can be a springboard for tomorrow's leaders. (ERIC).
