Abstract | Love, beauty, and the good are three key concepts of Platonic aesthetics, which frequently appear in the fairy tales of Oscar Wilde, a classical scholar deeply influenced by Plato and his philosophy. Plato's views on music, as a part of his aesthetics, were championed by Wilde, who regarded music as "the perfect type of art." It is hardly surprising then, that music plays a part in nearly all his fairy tales. Several lovers and beauties are endowed with musicality, whereas other characters are shown to be transformed as a result of music healing their souls and causing them to lead a good life. It is argued that Wilde, in uniting music with love, beauty and the good, subtly deepens his readers' understanding of ethics through their aesthetic experience. Although an advocate of Aestheticism with its slogan "art for art's sake," in these tales Wilde demonstrates that he has performed the moral duty of a good artist: to deliver educational messages through art and convey the attractions of leading a good life. This conforms to Plato's view that a fine work by a qualified poet will reveal the noble behaviour and graceful disposition of a good man. (As Provided). |
