AbstractGiven the unavoidable prevalence of death in the world, the author writes that she finds it interesting that teachers devote little if any class time to the topic of grief. Teachers often avoid talking about recent losses, cloak death in metaphors and euphemisms, and feel discomfort around grieving students. Yet death still comes to classrooms. Having lost her own father in pre-school, Allison Rogers, has learned this from personal experience when she says that it might have been helpful for her to be able to talk about her ongoing grieving process openly in her childhood classrooms. She feels that perhaps it would have helped if her teachers and peers had understood some of her behaviors thereby helping her building a bigger toolkit for understanding herself and others later in life. Here she shares her own grief journey with other teachers hoping that teachers will understand this and perhaps will find the ability to move forward to create curricular opportunities that approach emotional literacy in a grief positive way. Teachers can feel equipped and empowered to initiate frank compassionate learning with students whether they are actively grieving or not. This article is one instructional resource that seeks to provide ideas and resources to further such efforts. The artworks discussed in this resource are open to multiple interpretations, as understanding of each differs from person to person and evolves over time. This resource, looks at each work of art through a lens of emotional literacy, grief, or commemoration. (ERIC).
