Abstract | Human rights organizations have been rapidly searching for ways to combat the acceleration of human rights abuses within the United States and Europe, noting a link between the rise of the far right and increasing instances of discrimination, intolerance and violence against marginalized communities. And yet, increased efforts among human rights defenders have not stemmed the tide. Instead, drawing on the psychology and neuroscience of morality, the Unified Theory of Western Extremism serves as a conceptual model to understand the advancement of hate crimes and speech. Developing an awareness of the psychology and neurobiology that drive these behaviors constitutes a crucial first step in developing effective interventions necessary to mitigate the violence and cruelty currently unleashed.
