Abstract | This study, followed by an historical review of Shinichi Suzuki's work, investigated the contemporary and critical issues surrounding the Suzuki Method in Japan. First, the author compared textbooks and recordings of the Suzuki Violin School Volume 1, the Japanese version, published in 1970s to the present edition in Japan. In addition, the study compared the first and second movements of Vivaldi's A Minor Concerto in Suzuki Violin School Volumes 4 and 5, both in the textbooks and recordings. Next, the study investigated the overall tradition and learning environment of Suzuki lessons from past to present. The study reviewed the lessons taught by Suzuki himself in recordings. The researcher also observed selected lessons and conducted informal interviews with Suzuki teachers to share contemporary issues surrounding the method. The evidence implied that the method in general has become more technically oriented, with less of a family atmosphere and playful stance. (As Provided). |
