AbstractIn this article, the authors reflect on a storytelling tunnel book project, from their interdisciplinary course Art & Social Justice for nonmajors at Nazareth College, a small, private, liberal arts college in New York. The authors argue that in an era of increased political polarization, rising racism, and xenophobia, storytelling is a powerful tool for opening up spaces of empathy in potentially challenging conversations about race and privilege. They state that if the personal is political, then part of the work done in this course is making the political personal, bringing the seemingly unwieldy issues of discrimination, injustice, and privilege to the level of personal story that is relatable. In this article, they explain their teaching context, discuss their tunnel book project, and share student examples. They view storytelling as a form of socially just pedagogy that allows for "full and equal participation of all" students in a setting "mutually shaped to meet their needs" (Adams, Bell, & Griffin, 2007, p. 27).
