Abstract | As science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educators in a teacher education program, it was discovered that students have commonly limited preconceptions about technology. Based on classroom experiences, when students are challenged to make a quick list regarding their ideas and examples of technology, they usually focus on digital/electronic technology. In fact, rarely does a student reference anything other than examples of electronic or digital technology when asked to brainstorm about technology in general. In order to help preservice elementary generalists and middle school science preservice teachers think in terms of technology in both digital and nondigital contexts, along with the role of technology throughout human history, a series of activities was created that allows students to think in terms of an historical perspective. Despite this activity sequence being developed for future teachers, it can readily be adapted for elementary and middle school students. This lesson sequence interrelates standards in several subject areas across technology, social studies, engineering, and science and can be generally be done in two to three class periods, with time in between to allow for students to work on their research, create their interactive web projects, and construct their models.
