Abstract | At California State University Northridge (CSUN), Stevie Ruiz's students reflect the multiracial communities of Los Angeles County. The students are children of immigrants, working class, first-generation college students, and queer people of color. Students share a wealth of knowledge that is shaped by race, gender, sexual, and class inequality and rarely require an explaination for why race and class continue to be major factors in the determination of social outcomes. As the newest faculty member to join the Chicana/o Studies Department, the author writes of his pride to witness his first cohort of seniors about to graduate from CSUN. This reflection essay is a commentary about the types of barriers these students face to resist colonial education inside the California State University (CSU) system. The author offers insights into the ways in which CSUN students model transformative imaginaries in their protest in order to achieve educational equity. (ERIC). |
