Abstract | While some journalists analyze and verify "open source" materials such as social media, eyewitness video, and satellite imagery to hold leaders and institutions accountable, many journalists and students are not learning basic digital verification skills. Research shows that journalists find this work challenging and that newsrooms do not consistently offer resources. Educators can fill this gap, and address problems the press faces in a post-truth age, such as student overtrust of digital sources, public distrust of the media, and the advancement of tools to fake visual information. This essay offers exercises and resources for educators in a variety of settings. (As Provided). |
