Abstract | Research highlights the importance of comprehensive, integrated approaches to improve the educational outcomes of crossover youth (youth involved in both child welfare and juvenile justice systems). One such approach is multisystem collaboration among professionals working in the education, child welfare, and juvenile justice systems. The lack of multisystem collaboration creates a serious gap between research and best practice. Unfortunately, service systems generally operate in silos and experience numerous barriers that make collaboration difficult, thereby preventing crossover youth from having access to comprehensive care (Gonsoulin & Read, 2011). The purpose of this two-part series is to (a) highlight the educational outcomes and challenges crossover youth face in the school setting, (b) identify research that examines the impact of multisystem collaboration on youth's outcomes, (c) describe barriers to collaborating between service systems, and (d) offer both research and practice recommendations to bridge the gap.
