AbstractMunir Fasheh is one of the best known Palestinian learning theorists and practitioners, who taught mathematics and physics at Birzeit University in Palestine. Based in Ramallah, Fasheh founded the Tamer Institute for Community Education during the first Intifada as a centre for developing learning environments outside of schooling in Palestine. He also founded the Arab Education Forum (AEF) at Harvard University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies in 1997 and directed it for ten years: the AEF 'attempts to develop a shared vision related to learning in the Arab world . . . that springs out of authentic initiatives which start with and build on what people do and what culture has.' Fasheh is committed to building an understanding and practice of community learning that is tied to living in harmony with wisdom. As such, he works as part of an active network of theorists and practitioners that spans the global South, from India to South Africa to Mexico. Fasheh has continued to focus on the learning and use of maths in community contexts. In this interview, Fasheh responds to questions posed to him by Mayssoun Sukarieh. Among others, the interview covers the following topic areas: How Fasheh's work has been shaped by Indigenous, Arab educational traditions; the importance of the core concepts, such as "mujawara," that guide Fasheh's education work; how Fasheh practices deschooling in his own work in Palestine; and Fasheh's intellectual journey from being a university professor of mathematics to the community learning work that he does now.
