Abstract | This article presents results of a field-based course for sophomore preservice teachers to prepare them to work effectively with English language learners (ELs). Qualitative and quantitative measures were taken to gain insight into the degree of course participants' increase of awareness about ELs' characteristics, their social and academic instructional needs, and legal background information on working with ELs in public school settings in the southeastern region of the U.S. Overall, results indicate a distinct increase of awareness in all assessed aspects for the majority of participants. Suggestions for other teacher education programs are provided to explore similar field-based training modules. (As Provided). |
