Abstract | This article demonstrates how teachers can represent a different culture in their instructional planning while still meeting state-mandated content standards. It shares the lessons learned by practicing and pre-service teachers through an experience designed to help them become more culturally responsive teachers. Participants spent a month in Brazil gaining knowledge in three aspects of diversity: Brazilian culture, Portuguese language, and the experiences of people with disabilities and their families in Rio de Janeiro. They then applied their new insights into diversity by creating instructional plans, and those plans were analyzed to identify some of the strategies that teachers can use to increase their students' cultural responsiveness. An Appendix contains four complete lesson plans designed by the program participants. (As Provided). |
