AbstractResearch has shown that East Asian American undergraduate students are experiencing socialization and mental health challenges at American institutions of higher education. Many do not seek help or are unable to obtain adequate help due to cultural implications or societal expectations. This qualitative narrative analysis explored the lived experience of 5 East Asian American undergraduate students and how they described their help-seeking behaviors when dealing with socialization and mental health challenges at an elite ivy plus academic institution. The study revealed that participants struggled with imposter syndrome while trying to meet the expectations of being a model student at an ivy plus university. Participants also indicated that they were taught to be help-seeking reluctant during their upbringings, and preferred to seek help from their peers rather than university counseling services. The study also showed that participants were afforded access to predominantly White spaces and resources but were not accepted as equals, in that they still experienced racial discrimination. Lastly, participants experienced mental health challenges that were significantly impacted by academic stressors.
