AbstractThis qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis study explored the lived experiences of seven peer recovery specialists as they described their experiences with the Virginia Peer Recovery Certification Process and/or obtaining leadership roles. This research was viewed through a disability lens, along with modified labeling theory, systems theory, and self-determination theory, forming the theoretical frameworks for this study. This research suggested three emerging themes derived from transcriptions of interviews from the seven participants. These themes included (1) career-oriented, (2) person-centered, and (3) triple-identity. The implications of this study include (10 when the PRS feels autonomous and competent he or she can pursue certification, (2) a person's lived experiences helps him or her want to help others, (3) there still exists professional challenges for the PRS (4) There needs to be a stricter sampling process to ensure appropriate sampling characteristics are captured, (5) PRSs are concerned with their care as well as the welfare of those they help,(6) Stigma is very prevalent and accounts for a major barrier (7) Better question construction to address eroding goals archetype needed. The gap that was addressed was the lack of PRSs seeking certification or leadership roles. This research brings hope of why not, not why try.
