AbstractSchool counselors' roles in schools are constantly evolving. Over the span of approximately 70 years, school officials have acknowledged the significance of school counselors in K-12 education. However, despite the acknowledgment, school counselors continue to experience elevated levels of stress that potentially lead to burnout. Some of the leading factors contributing to high levels of stress and burnout among school counselors working in rural areas include role ambiguity, unreasonable caseloads, and school counselors' career satisfaction and commitment. School counselors' duties are distinctly outlined in the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) National model. Although the ASCA model indicated appropriate duties for school counselors, some school counselors often experience inappropriate work duties. In particular, school counselors in rural areas experience greater workloads that often include inappropriate duties due to limited resources. The issue of counselors' inappropriate work duties has led to ongoing role conflict and ambiguity for school counselors and individuals in leadership positions ASCA also provided a recommended student-to-school counselor ratio set so counselors can effectively provide services to their students. With the recommended school counselor to student ratio set at 1:250, counselors should not find it challenging to provide competent services for their students. However, most rural schools have a student-to-school counselor ratio of 1:550, which is double the ratio specified in the ASCA. American School Counselor Association officials proposed that school counselors enhance the personal/social, academic, and career development of all students.
