AbstractStudents around the United States continue to struggle in areas of literacy. The problem addressed by this study is that fourth-grade students in the United States are scoring below proficiency in reading levels including areas of comprehension and reading fluency (Leon, 2015). The purpose of the mixed method study was to examine fourth-grade students' fluency and reading comprehension change after using the Lyrics 2 Learn software, and students' perceptions concerning the program. Lyrics 2 Learn (2017) is an online program utilizing music in correlation with reading to increase fluency and comprehension skills. Twenty two fourth-grade students from an elementary school in Northwest Arkansas participated in the research. Quantitative research questions involved determining if the Lyrics 2 Learn program made a significant difference in the reading comprehension and fluency skills of the student. The question was also divided to determine if there were significant differences between males versus females. Quantitative variables included the MAPSs, Bebop, and DIBELS reading assessments. Qualitative data was obtained through a Google form. Students were asked to give personal perceptions of the program including favorite parts of the program as well. Results for the research question involving the implementation of the program showed significant positive outcomes for all students. There was no significant difference in outcomes between males and females. Student perceptions concerning the integration of the program into the curriculum proved positive overall. Comments included enjoying the lyrics and comprehension questions. The results of the study show that the Lyrics 2 Learn program can be a positive tool for any classroom if properly implemented within the daily content.
