AbstractIt is evident that there is an extreme lack of ethnically diverse female characters represented in children's literature (Hurley, 2005). For this reason, the researcher conducted a qualitative content analysis to answer the question, "In what ways are ethnically diverse female characters portrayed in the third-grade Wonders Literature Anthology', 'Reading/Writing Workshop,' and the 'Wonders' guided reading books (McGraw-Hill, 2016)?" Through this inquiry, the researcher hopes to empower educators and parents to examine children's books with a critical lens when selecting literature to read with children and to challenge authors, illustrators, and publishers to include strong ethnically diverse characters in the pages of their books. After examining the 52 stories, it was evident there was a lack of representation of ethnically diverse female characters. Furthermore, this study found that when there were ethnically diverse female characters represented within the pages of the story they were often portrayed solely as a caregiver/nurturer, often shown in the roles of a mother or a teacher. The researcher noted the importance of portraying female characters in children's literature in non-stereotypical roles since long-term stereotypes do not reflect current realities. In sum, it is not only important for young ethnically diverse females to see themselves represented within the pages of the stories, but it is equally imperative that male students are able to see strong female characters, which will send the message of equality: Anything boys can do, girls can do as well!
