AbstractThis study is a qualitative analysis of the use of best practices in vocational training for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the Omaha metropolitan area. Best practices from the transition literature related to vocational training were identified as transition planning, parental involvement, community support, and use of evidence-based practices. Seven professionals were interviewed using a semi structured interview developed by the researchers. The interviews were then transcribed. A coding procedure was used to identify frequent themes across all responses and quotes were pulled from the transcripts to highlight themes. Best practices were realized by responders, but various limits were identified in fulfilling them. The limitations in fulfilling best practices varied depending on the area the school resided and the community they worked within. Best practices are used with sparsity in Omaha but not for a lack of education and understanding. This research makes it apparent that legal roadblocks, policy issues, community ambivalence, and lack of transportation are hindering the transition experiences for students with IDD in Omaha.
