AbstractThe purpose of this dissertation was to ascertain the outcomes of the transition of community colleges that now offer the nursing baccalaureate degree (BSN). Specifically, this study provides insight into the factors that prompted the addition of the BSN, the relationship to the institution's mission, faculty and administration perceptions of the new offering, and any challenges associated with the implementation of the BSN. The total survey respondents were (N = 128) and the response rate was 31.9%. The study investigated the views of 2 administrators, 11 deans, 9 department chairs, and 106 faculty members from 30 community colleges who were involved in their community college's transition into offering a new baccalaureate degree, the BSN. Data collection included obtaining factors that influenced the decision to offer a BSN, the challenges in becoming a baccalaureate degree awarding institution, and how faculty/administration viewed the new program. The findings of this study indicate that faculty and administrators from the thirty colleges perceive that workforce needs, student demands, the need for an affordable pathway for students, increased enrollment, alignment with the institution's missions, legislative mandates, and accessibility have influenced the development of community college BSN degrees. The study also confirmed a number of challenges encountered in becoming a baccalaureate awarding institution. The challenges were identified as budgetary factors, accreditation issues, legislative issues, curricular challenges, academic leadership support, faculty support, and administrative leadership support as factors that created challenges for the institution. Additionally, this research revealed that the majority of respondents believed that there was strong evidence to support the need for offering a BSN degree, that staff members initially supported and currently support the institutions offering the BSN degree. The majority of respondents also believed that offering the BSN degree had a positive effect on enrollment, finances, and on community stakeholders. These insights suggest that offering the BSN degree at community colleges had positive effects on institutional stakeholders.
