AbstractThis school-based yoga program was developed for elementary school aged children with autism spectrum disorder-level 1, also referred to as high functioning autism. High functioning autism (HFA) is associated with developmental delays in social domains involving communication and interaction, as well as restricted, repetitive behaviors, and sensory challenges (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Common comorbid concerns relate to attention, anxiety and depression (Stoddart, 2005; Tarazi, et al., 2015; Volkmar, et al., 2014). While there is some existing literature regarding the efficacy of yoga as an intervention for children with autism, the majority of the literature regarding yoga focuses on these comorbid diagnoses (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2016; Birdee, et al., 2009; Black, et al., 2015; Galantino, 2008). This dissertation addressed this discrepancy first with a review of the literature regarding high functioning autism; existing research for yoga as a school based intervention for children's attention, anxiety and depression; and, the efficacy of using yoga in schools with children who have autism. Following this review, a formal needs assessment was conducted, involving interviews with occupational therapists, mental health professionals, and educators. The literature review and needs assessment informed recommendations for the development of "Go with the Flow: A School Based Yoga Program for Elementary School Aged Students with High Functioning Autism."
