AbstractThe United States is facing a significant nurse educator shortage, with the National League for Nursing (2016) reporting that 28% of Associate Degree Nursing Programs (ADNP) have faculty vacancies. As a means to fill these nursing faculty shortages, colleges and universities often hire expert nurse clinicians without formalized training in higher education (Gardner, 2014). Unfortunately, this practice has proven to be counterintuitive as Gardner (2014) reports novice nurse educators leave academia due to insufficient orientation practices. Moreover, Kirkham (2016) states many new nurse educators will leave academia and return to the clinical setting due to lack of satisfaction in their new educator role. Davis et al. (2014) confirms the lack of formal training for novice nurse educators and the difficult transition from bedside to classroom are the principal reasons novice educators are not satisfied in their new role. With these known obstacles impacting the retention of novice nurse educators compounding the nationwide nurse faculty shortage, this dissertation investigates novice nurse educator orientation practices across the United States. Multiple successful orientation practices have been identified, including use of orientation models, mentors, and faculty development programs. After blending these successful practices, an orientation resource guide was developed to assist novice full-time nurse educators in their orientation process at a Mid-Atlantic Community College.
