AbstractCurrent research regarding teacher and administrator perceptions of cultural awareness and whether educators feel prepared to meet the needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds needs to be expanded. The purpose of this study was to determine if a difference existed in cultural perceptions and the ability to meet the needs of culturally diverse learners among elementary, middle, and high school teachers and administrators in a rural public school division by specifically exploring relationships between gender, age, ethnicity, and teaching experience (e.g., academic settings and grade level/content taught). Overall, results from an analysis of variance indicated no statistical significant difference existed among elementary, middle and high school teachers and administrators regarding perception of cultural awareness and whether educators feel prepared or not to meet the needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. No significant statistical differences were found within or between the educator groups or by demographic factor, such as gender, level of education, school assigned to, current position, educated in other settings, as well as the other demographic data examined. Nevertheless, this study provided more information regarding factors that may possibly influence perception of cultural awareness among educators and whether they feel prepared to meet the needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Accordingly, the findings from this study provide a need for more research on the relationships between educator perceptions of cultural awareness and how prepared educators are to meet the needs of all students. The findings also aim to encourage policy makers to re-evaluate education reform and promote educator programs that refocus efforts on requirements, training, and skills necessary to support culturally responsive educating.
