AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate whether giving to an institution by a graduate differs based on participation in various types of alumni programming. With the continuing cost pressures on higher education institutions, growing alumni donations is increasingly seen as a way to increase revenue. While alumni relations offices have historically helped keep alumni engaged with their alma mater, in recent years, it has become even more important to understand whether certain alumni programs lead to greater financial support. This study investigated the relationship between participation in different types of alumni programming and a change in financial support to the institution. Data from two similar institutions, both liberal arts colleges in the Northeast, were analyzed. Each institution's data set was evaluated separately and then as a combined data set using Chi square analyses to test the relationship between participation in different types of alumni programs and a change in giving to the institution. A significant relationship was found between participation in different program types and a change in giving, although not all program types were found to be significant. A significant relationship was also found for individuals who made a gift in the previous year and those who did not make a gift in the previous year. This shows that giving differs by type of alumni program attended, which can help higher education institutions better align resources to foster increased giving to the institution.
